Caring for Injured Teeth

March 8, 2021

Having an accident that knocks out a filling, chips a tooth, or severe toothaches can happen at any time. If it’s after closing hours or on the weekend, your dentist may not be available, which means you need to find emergency dentistry. However, not every town has an emergency clinic, or it may be after hours for them. So, what do you do when having a dental crisis?

If our dentist at U Smile Family Dentistry isn’t available when you or someone in your family has a dental emergency, there are temporary remedies that you can try. When the dentistry is open the next morning, you can call to schedule a time to see our dentist in Mesa, AZ. Here are some of the ways to care for a tooth.

Lost Fillings

An older filling can fall out while eating a sticky piece of candy or talking to a friend, and it needs replacing as soon as possible. However, if an emergency dentist is not available, you can temporarily fill the hole in your tooth. Most pharmacies carry repair kits that hold the filling in place until you can go to our dentist near you. Another way to seal the hole is to place a piece of sugar-free gum into it.

Chipped or Broken Tooth

A fall onto a concrete or hard hit to your jaw can chip or break a tooth, requiring emergency attention. If an appointment isn’t available with an emergency dentist, rinse your mouth out with warm water, and bite down on some gauze to stop the bleeding.

If you find the broken piece of tooth, rinse it carefully with lukewarm water. Place it into enough milk to cover it, and then take it with you to see our dentist, who can try repairing your tooth. Also, hold a cold pack to your jaw for about 10 minutes to reduce swelling and discomfort.

If an emergency happens at night or on the weekend when you cannot get to U Smile Family Dentistry, follow these instructions to doctor your tooth. These temporary measures can help until you can get to our dentist in Mesa, AZ.
